Early to mid C17, refronted in mid C18. Large rubble stone inn probably originally including Portwell House to east. 3-storey and attic with steep stone tiled roof and 2 renewed large chimney stacks with diagonal brick shafts on stone base. 4 flat dormers. Roughcast front with parapet and stone band over first floor. Painted angle quoins and plain window surrounds. 5-window range. Ground floor semi-basement with one small sash and 2 3-light stone mullioned windows flanking stone 4-centred arched doorway with original plank door. Early C18 Doric porch with 2 columns and pilaster responds. Panelled wood framing to doorway. 4 windows to first floor, 5 to second floor, glazing bar sash windows. To east side large carriage arch with stone 4-centred arch, single chamfered. Rear: later C17 external staircase, closed string, turned balusters and moulded rail. C17 stone arched doorway to basement with plank door. Interior: early C17 plaster ceiling to first floor front room, shallow relief interlaced lines with foliage. Rear courtyard with stuccoed 2-storey C18 west range. Modern tiled roof. Deep coved cornice to west front and slight north return. 6-window range at first floor, 3 earlier C18 windows at south end. C19 verandah to ground floor and rear of main front range. North side, early C18, stuccoed rubble stone with steep pitched stone tiled roof. One segment headed dormer. 4-window range of segment-headed glazing bar sash windows, 1 removed at first floor and ground floor 1 converted to door. The east side of the courtyard is part of Portwell House, adjoining.
