334/4/54 STAINBURN LANE 22-FEB-85 (South side) Methodist Church and retaining Wall wi th Gate and Steps

Methodist Chapel. 1826. Coursed gritstone, stone slate roof. Central, C20, panelled double doors flanked by large, 30-light sashes, all with plain surrounds. Inscription on square plaque above door has date 'MDCCCXXVI' and a quotation from Matthew 24 verse 14. Hipped roof and stack at rear left corner. Ramped retaining wall to south and east sides of the building, and a square-headed gateway with C20 board door with decorative hinges gives access on north side to Stainburn Lane. This gate is reached by a flight of 3 semicircular stone steps incorporating an iron boot-scraper. INTERIOR has original panelled wooden sloping pews with central stepped aisle. Wooden panelled pulpit with steps handrail and communion rail. Dado panelling to north wall with choir benches; corner fireplace now blocked.
