CASTLE STREET 1.

1594 (West Side) No 83 No 85 (George & Dragon Public House) No 87 (including former No 1 Avon View) SU 1430 SW 1/285 28.2.52.

II* GV 2.

Early C16 possibly one house originally. 2 storeys and attic timber framed.

lst floor oversails partly on moulded bressumer. Plastered and stuccoed, Gables to the "George and Dragon" and to No 87. Old tile roof. C19 barge boards on shaped brackets to gable of No 87. Irregular fenestration: 2 attic casements and 4 windows 1st floor casements and sashes, some C18, glazing bars. On ground floor No 83 retains frame of early C19 shop front with thin flanking pilasters and moulded cornice, fascia board added. The George and Dragon on ground floor has from left to right, a panlled and glazed door, rectangular fanlight, flanked by narrow sash windows with thin pilaster frame - a canted bay window with 2 fixed and central sash lights glazing bars - passage entrance to right with moulded oak frame. 4-centred arched head and moulded spandrels. No 87 has a late C19 shop front. In the adjoining passage leading to Avon View qv, timber framing in north wall of No 87 is exposed: blocked ogee headed door and window frames. An early C19 2 storey red brick wing with flush framed sash windows, glazing bars, links No 87 with the former No 1 Avon View now part of same premises. This is a probable C17, 2 storey timber framed cottage with brick infilling. 2 casements, hood to plain door. There is a cambered tie beam in the east wall internally. The rear of No 85 has tile hung gables.

Part of the roof structure survives to Nos 83- 85 and 87 with intermediate trussed collars, tie beam, inclined braces clasped purlins, part of windbrace.

Nos 77 to 87 (odd), No 2 Avon View and Nos 91 to 95 (odd) form a group.
