ST 8032-8132 MERE CASTLE STREET (south side)

6/22 Milestone Cottage

GV II

House, right half of a pair. C18. Squared coursed rubble, the upper courses better cut than those below, slate roof, probably replacing thatch. Two storeys, 2 windows: ground floor has flat-roofed slightly canted bay, former shop window, and a 15-pane horizontal fixed casement, first floor with two small 2-light leaded casements with early fittings. Off-centre left C20 glazed door. Back has good 2-light C18 casement with fittings at first floor. Brick gable stack to right. One storey wing at back not of special interest. The walling at front and gables suggests a roof raising. Name derives from milestone at front of cottage (q.v.)
