BISHOPSTROW BISHOPSTROW VILLAGE ST 84 SE (west side) 3/8 The Cottage, (formerly listed as Drayton's School) 11.9.68 II

Detached house. Mid C17 with alterations and addition to south of mid C18. Flemish bond brick, with stone dressings to C18 build, tiled roof, brick stacks. T-plan. Two-storey, 8-windowed with 12- pane sashes. C18 build to left has door with 6 fielded panels in moulded architrave with flat wooden hood on brackets, 2-storey canted bay to left with sashes has lozenge diaper decoration, chamfered rusticated quoins, first floor has plat band and sash over door, moulded stone cornice and blocking course with stone coping. C17 build to right has four small flush sashes to ground and first floor, this facade a C18 refacing with blocking course.

Right return has C20 casements to rubble stone wall. Rear has C17 wing with C20 door and casements, first floor rebuilt early C19 with sash, casements and sashes to right of main build, C20 lean-to extension to left.

Interior has open fireplace with chamfered lintel on stone jambs and chamfered beam with runout stops to rear wing. C17 main range has chamfered beams with runout stops, one beam with deep chamfer, C18 square stone fireplace with chamfered jambs and lintel, doors with 2 fielded panels and L or H hinges. C18 build has stair hall with round arched opening with keystone and imposts, good stairs have three turned balusters per tread with shaped cheeks and moulded ramped handrail. Door with 6 fielded panels in moulded architrave to drawing-room, marble eared fireplace surround has rococo frieze and cornice, dentilled ceiling cornice. First floor has C17 deeply chamfered beam with bar stops, C18 square beaded fireplace surround, doors with 2 or 6 fielded panels and H hinges, beaded architraves.
