Milestone. 1840. Cast-iron pillar with classical pedimented top and plinth, lettering in relief: WARMINSTER/5/MILES/SHAFTESBURY /10/MILES, Initials C & M/W 1840 on plinth, representing the Warminster firm of ironfounders, Carson and Miller. Part of the radial turnpike system established around Warminster in 1726, a series of cast-iron milestones were produced c1840, coinciding with a consolidation of the Turnpike Act. (R.
