3.5.49 Church Cottage - II

C16, Cl7, C18. A building of several periods, the core being a late medieval hall with a north wing (now altered) and a late south wing; to the rear (west) of the north end is an attached barn of the C18; minor modern rear attachments.

The front (east) is of 2 storeys with irregular fenestration, under an old hipped tile roof. The centre has a massive exposed timber frame, the upper part jettied above a moulded board, the ground-floor section with bricknozzled close verticals and almost continuous fenestration in its upper part (including an original mullioned light, a mullioned and transomed bay, a later mullioned window, and a brick-filled frame ending at the north side as a Tudor doorway with old boarded door. The south side has later 1st floor exposed framing above modern brickwork; this is repeated at the north side but the exterior screens an older full-height interior of 3 bays. The barn has a quoins post frame with aisles of 6 bays with modern dormer-like windows. Within, the oldest part is a ground floor room, with an inserted ceiling and massive fireplace, some Cl7 panelling, Tudor door frames, and a panelled door. Upstairs the Queen post truss is exposed. Windows are modern casements. The building was a priest's house with tithe barn later a malthouse, and still later a National School.
