DURSLEY MAY LANE ST 7598 (east side) 5/45 No 21 (Hollis House) 18.3.83 II

Former detached house, now offices. c1840. Flemish bond red brick to front; coursed limestone rubble to ends and rear; brick chimneys; stone slate roof. Three-storey with 2-storey projection on east end. Front: 2-window fenestration, all with keyed stone wedge lintels with segmental-arched intrados. Tripartite plate glass sashes to ground floor; C19 casements to middle and upper floors. Central doorway with C20 brick enclosed single-storey porch. Attached lean-to projects forward to left. Ridge-mounted gable end chimney stacks. West end: scattered segmental-arched casements; small leaded attic casement with timber lintel. East end: off-centre hipped-roofed projection. Rear: scattered segmental-arched casements. Flue brickwork exposed in wall running up to 2 eaves-mounted chimneys, that to left now removed. Interior not inspected. Was first home of the Dursley Agricultural and Commercial Grammar School founded by Canon George Madan, vicar of Cam, and Sir George Provost, vicar of Stinchcombe. Forms important architectural stop at bend in street.
