Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

NEEDHAM MARKET HIGH STREET (WEST) TM 0855 No.75 and part of No.77 3/83 -

- II

Estate Agent's office and part of shop with dwelling above. Early or mid C16 with C19 alterations. Timber-framed and roughcast. Plaintiled roof with axial and rear chimneys of red brick. 2 storeys, 3 windows. A pair of C20 shop windows flanking a half-glazed panelled doorway to No.75. The right-hand bay is in the occupancy of No.77 High Street although structurally part of No.75.

Good unmoulded C16 timber-framing exposed internally, giving evidence for a long-wall jetty towards the street. Arch-braced trusses with crownpost roof, the posts square with 2-way bracing. As with a number of C16 houses in Needham Market, there is an unbraced tie-beam spanning the chamber above the hall, at abouts its mid-point. Evidence for mullioned and shuttered windows.

A rear wing to right was added in C17 and much extended in C18/C19 (now part of No.77).
