TL 51 SW MATCHING HOUSHAM TYE 3/84 The Homestead
GV II
House, early C17. Timber framed, plastered with exposed framing at front of first floor only, roofed with C20 red tiles. 4 bays aligned approximately E-W, axial chimney stack in second bay from W. External chimney stack at E gable.
Lean-to extension at W end. 2 storeys. 3 window range of C20 casements, C20 tiled gabled porch. Some framing exposed internally. Jowled wallposts, straight tiebeams, curved bracing trenched inside studs in most of house, straight bracing trenched inside studs in W bay. Chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops. Clasped purlin roof. There is a straight joint between the W bay and the remainder of the house. Both parts are of the early C17, but the W bay is slightly later in date than the rest. The Walker map of 1609 (Essex Record Office D/DU 25) shows a single storey house on this site. The present house is built in 2 storeys from the outset and is not an adaptation of the 1609 house, although the chimney stack could be the same. RCHM 12.
