TL 51 SW MATCHING HOUSHAM TYE 3/83 Rose Cottage
GV II
Pair of cottages, early C19, converted to one house. Timber-framed, plastered, roofed with slate. Ridge aligned NW-SE, aspect NE. One chimney stack in front of ridge, one behind ridge, on dividing line between the two cottages. Lean-to extension with slate roof at W, lean-to porch with slate roof at E, conservatory to rear, C20. 2 storeys. Ground floor, one 6-panel door, 2 early C19 double-hung sash windows, other door blocked and plastered. First floor, 2 early C19 double-hung sash windows. This building may retain elements of a single-storeyed lobby-entrance house recorded on this site in the Walker map of 1609 (Essex Record Office D/DU 25), but it was not possible to determine this as access was refused in March 1983.
