Pair of houses. Early C19. Coursed, squared limestone rubble with ashlar party wall stack and a left-hand stone slate and right-hand interlocking tile roof. Double-depth plan. Each of 2 storeys and attic; 2:1-window range. A low plinth, timber lintels to left-hand doorways with half-glazed doors, No.40 with a ground-floor plate-glass shop window and 2 first-floor C19 casements, No.42 with a plate-glass sash in a flush box with a first-floor casement, and 2 gabled dormers with casements. INTERIOR: not inspected.
