ST9386 ST JOHN'S STREET 758-1/3/298 (West side) 18/01/49 Nos.6 AND 8 and St John's Cottage

GV II

Pair of houses and later third house, now one. Mid C17 with mid C19 right-hand addition. Limestone rubble with brick gable stacks and a stone slate roof. Each a 2-room plan at right-angle plan. EXTERIOR: each of 1 storey and attic; 1-window range. Nos 6 and 8 have a symmetrical front with a central gable dormer, above paired central doorways with C20 boarded doors beneath a timber lintel which extends left over the window, similar right-hand window, with C19 casements with glazing bar; 2-light attic mullion casement with leaded lights in metal frames with stay bars and turn buckles; evidence of considerable alteration to the ground floor. St John's Cottage to left has a lower ridge, with a left-hand doorway, 2/2-pane horned sash and gabled half dormer with a 2/2-pane sash; rear range extends back. INTERIOR: not inspected but reported to be altered; now in one occupation. HISTORICAL NOTE: reported to have formerly had mullioned ground-floor windows.
