WAVERLEY ROAD 1.
5104 Small Heath B10 Oldknow Lower School SP 08 NE 7/90 II* GV 2.
C1880-5, by Martin of Martin and Chamberlain. Red brick with cut and moulded brick and terracotta dressings. Single storeyed. Five gabled bays, the fourth and fifth staggered somewhat. Each bay with a single large 2 centred arched window with, in the gables above, blank lights in terracotta between the vertical banding. In the fifth gable, 2 lancet type windows with an encircled quatrefoil in the gable above.
On the left a cross wing that extends down the east side with close set gabled windows. Above all, rises sheer a slender tower whose height is accentuated by quoin pilasters and central vertical ribbing to each face. Above, a band of blind traceried windows. Then prominent corner pinnacles between which rise diminutive panelled gables to each side. From the middle rises a short openwork spire in the manner of Burgos, crocketted in its upper part and terminating in an iron weathervane.
At the rear, towards Byron Road, a broad advanced gabled bay with 2 broad lancet windows with encircled quatrefoil above, then 3 even gabled bays similar but somewhat narrower and lower and with a pair of pointed arched sash windows in the gable and then, on the right, a large 2 storeyed, apparently later, wing 4 gabled bays by 4 gabled bays square and in a generally less rich style. The whole site is enclosed by its original walls and railings. Brick with terracotta finial cap.
Plan rails on iron coping to dwarf walls. For the former Master's house here, see No 10 Byron Road.
