Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

ST 7693 4/141 WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE OLD TOWN (north)

No. 9 (Court House) GV II

Dwelling, formerly supposed to have been a Court House. C17. Rendered, welsh slate roof. Wide frontage, modest span structure, possibly designed originally as one large room but now in two storeys, with roof space having trusses raised from ties on rudimentary brackets (as elsewhere in Wotton). Two storeys, four-windowed, three-light casements irregularly spaced; modern door.

Upper storey interior, two plaster panels now whitewashed : left end royal coat of arms, James II (? See Lindley p 129) and right end Berkeley arms; also two transverse beams, one with fleur de lis and other with Tudor rose (or acorn?) rosettes, also whitewashed. Position of decorative escutcheons suggests that ceiling formerly higher, or open roof.
