NZ 2563 NW NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE RIVER TYNE 24/478 New Tyne Bridge G.V. II Road bridge. 1925-8. Engineers Mott, Hay and Anderson; architect R. Burns Dick.

Construction by Dorman, Long and Company's bridge division. Two-hinged steel arch; steel columns support road approach spans; granite pylons, the bases solid and the towers concrete with granite cladding. Arch span 531 ft.: total length including approach spans is 1,254 ft. Octagonal columns of approaches, and hangers from arch, hold road bed, 84 ft. above high water level. Tall abutment towers have quasi-classical top detail and very tall arched recesses on outer faces, with balconies near the top. Towers have internal lifts, and towers and approaches are hollowed containing warehousing (never used). At the time of its construction the largest single-span steel arch bridge in Britain.
