Memorial. 1910. Granite and polished black marble and cast iron. Square granite base, marble plinth and tall pedestal with inscription. Cap supports small cupola and large urn with flowers. Gilded incised lines and inscription in memory of 344 men and boys killed in an explosion at the Pretoria pit, Westhoughton, 21st December 1910. Monument serves as gravestone to 24 unidentified bodies. Surrounding cast iron posts and rails. The Pretoria pit disaster was the worst in the historic county of Lancashire.
