ST BREWARD CHURCHTOWN, St Breward SX 07 NE 5/199 Disused farmhouse at Churchtown - Farm II

Small farmhouse now used as stone Circa mid C17. Local granite rubble and moorstone with roughly dressed granite quoins. Central range has rag slate roof with gable ends and the lower ranges to right and left have galvanised and rag slate roofs with gable ends. Granite rubble end stack on right hand gable end of central range. Plan: The house comprises a central range of 2 room plan, the right hand room heated by an end stack with cloam oven and the left hand room was probably unheated. The front entrance has been remodelled and there is possibly a blocked door opening near the centre on the rear elevation at the lower end on right. The house continues with a lower range with a distinct staight joint between the 2 ranges on the front elevation. However, there appears to be evidence of a possible passage which would have backed onto the lower side of the stack in the central range and a blocked door in the gable end which would have connected the two ranges. There is a C20 forge in the right hand gable end of the lower range. On the higher end of the central range to left, a circa C18 one-room plan extension.

The house therefore either appears to have originally comprised just the central range of 2-room plan or alternatively was of 3-room and cross or through passage plan, continuing to right, the front wall of the lower right hand range having been rebuilt.

In circa late C19 the house was used as a carriage house and stables for the rectory (gv Ladydown House, Four Seasons and house forming NE wing).

Exterior: Single storey central range with lower roofs to single storey ranges on right and left. C20 plank doors near centre and plank door to entrance in left hand range. Rear elevation with granite surround of 2-light mullion window lighting left hand room of central range.

Interior: Unmoulded granite lintel to fireplace and cloam oven (not accessible at time of survey). Roof structure of central range comprises 3 circa mid C19 scissor braced roof trusses, lap-jointed and pegged.
