Description

This photographic collection of six albums containing 570 prints records various civil engineering projects with which John Mason, Chartered Surveyor, was involved or interested. These projects include the redevelopment of The All England Club, Wimbledon, during the 1930s (1 album); the construction of a jetty at Ford's Dagenham car plant (1 album); and various harbour developments (Salcombe, Minehead, Portsmouth, Watchet, Weymouth and Ilfracombe). One album (AL0423) shows buildings constructed with reinforced Aglite concrete. Each album provides a photographic history of the progress of these projects, from demolition through construction to renovation, over a period of months or years.

The bulk of the images dates to the 1930s although there are 44 photographs dated between 1913 and 1914. These early views show widening work on Kingston Bridge, preparation for the demolition and replacement of Old Southwark Bridge, and the replacement of the lock gates at Tilbury Docks.
