Northumberland, Goodwin Sands - Kent (off)
Third Rate 70-gun warship built 1678 as part of Samuel Pepys' regeneration of the English navy. The first third rate ship to be built under contract, after it was realised that the naval dockyards could not cope with the construction of the number of ships requested. The warship foundered on Goodwin Sands during the 'Great Storm' of 1703. The site has continued to experience significant exposure due to sediment migration and associated threats. The licensee and Historic England are in the process of formulating a plan to mitigate these risks.
