Church of St Matthew, Summerhill Street, Newcastle upon Tyne - Newcastle upon Tyne

Built in 1877 by the local architect RJ Johnson, with a striking west tower added in 1895 by Hicks & Charlewood. The church has sandstone walls and a roof of plain clay tiles. The interior is tall and spacious with double aisles on either side of the nave. Funding, through the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England Repair Grants for Places of Worship scheme, enabled the completion of repairs to the nave and chancel roofs, and rainwater pipes, in 2014. Investigative work is required to assess issues affecting high level masonry.
