Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age), Handaxes

These two flint tools date back to the Palaeolithic or Old Stone Age. As their name suggests they would have been held in someones hand and used for chopping or cutting. This makes them some of the earliest stone tools used in Britain. Later stone tools were fixed into handles made of wood, bone or antler.
