Nottingham Castle, Nottingham, Nottingham

A Medieval motte and bailey castle was begun in 1068 by William I. By the time the gatehouse was built in 1252-1255 it had become one of the four principal English castles, and the main castle in the North Midlands. It was both a military stronghold and a royal palace. Extensive restoration was carried out from 1560-70. However it fell into disrepair during the reign of James 1 (1603-25). In 1651 all the fortifications were demolished except the gatehouse and the base of a tower. The site was cleared in 1674. A mansion was built on the site and is now used as a museum and art gallery.
