Details

STOKE FLEMING DARTMOUTH HILL SX84NE STOKE FLEMING. 6/157 The Old House including garden boundary walls adjoining South West and North East II

House, formerly known as Wembley House. Circa 1840, extended later in Cl9 and again in late C20. Stuccoed slate rubble with stuccoed quoins and hoodmoulds. Low-pitched 2-span slate roof with deep eaves, gable-ended to right and hipped over later Cl9 addition on left. Axial stack, originally gable-end stack, with 2 brick shafts. Plan: An unusual 4-storey villa with a kitchen and service rooms on the ground floor and one room on each floor above, the principal room on the first floor with the stairhall behind entered through a doorway at the back where the ground level is higher. Later in the Cl9 the house was extended by the addition of a 1-room plan wing on the left side where the ground is at the same level as at the back and a verandah was built across the front over an extension to the service rooms in the basement. This extension and the verandah were removed in the late C20. Exterior: 3 storeys and basement 1:2 bay south front. The 2 right hand bays are the original house and the 1 bay recessed slightly to the left is the later C19 addition. The original right hand part has 2 12-pane sashes on each floor, the ground and first floor with hoodmoulds, the first and second floor with raised stucco quoins. The windows have the original C19 12-pane sashes except for those on the first floor and the right hand one on the second floor which are C20 facsimiles. The basement has a stone rubble front wall with a late C20 glazed door and windows. Set back to the left the later C19 addition has a glazed garden door on the ground floor in an architrave with a triangular head with a keyblock and a wooden canted bay window on the first floor above with C19 triangular headed 4-pane sashes. Above the bay window a segmental tympanum recessed below the projecting eaves. The left hand return elevation has 2 blind first floor windows and a band at first floor level. The new elevation is rusticated stucco on the ground floor with a doorway to the left with a moulded cornice on console brackets and a Cl9 flush-panel door; a blocked window above and a small 4-pane sash above that. To the right the 3-storey C20 extension projects slightly. The right hand side facing the road has 2 gables, the smaller gable to the right, and a sash window on each floor to the right and a casement on the second floor to the left. Including the garden boundary walls adjoining south west and south east. C19. The south west front wall is a high slate rubble retaining wall which rises up to a higher level against the front of the house where it has rendered battlements and a Tudor arch doorway. At the back of the house to the north east there is a pair of rendered rusticated gate-piers with ball finials and a wrought-iron gate. Interior: An open-well staircase with an open-string and moulded soft-wood handrail ramped up to column newels and wreathed over the curtail; it rises through all floors except to the basement where there is a service stair below. The principal room on the piano nobi1e has a panelled china cupboard but the chimney-piece is C20. The ground floor room in the later Cl9 addition has a moulded plaster cornice. The internal joinery is largely intact including the panelled doors.
