ROUSHAM ROUSHAM PARK GARDENS SP4724 14/216 Statue of lion and horse 27/08/57 approx. 85m N of Rousham Park and at N end of Bowling Green (Formerly listed under .... and marble statue of a lion mauling a horse, on pedestal) GV II* Statue. 1743, by Scheemakers. Limestone. Depicts lion mauling horse, and stands on ashlar pedestal with moulded cornice. Stands at head of grass slope running down to River Cherwell, providing views of the 2 eyecatchers in Steeple Aston C.P. - Chapel of the Mill and Ornamental Arch. Forms a part of the landscape gardens laid out by William Kent, c.1733-40. (Rousham Park is included in the H.B.M.C. Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I; Buildings of England: Oxfordshire: p745; R. Gunnis, Dictionary of British Sculptors, 1660-1851, 1951, p342) `
