Description

An initial survey was begun privately by Mr Christopher F. Stell (a former RCHME staff member). This was followed up by an RCHME field investigation of nonconformist religious buildings throughout the whole of England, resulting in a survey of over four thousand examples.

The purpose of the survey was to 'stimulate interest and better inform all those concerned with the future of a class of building threatened by both demolition and ill advised alterations.' The survey was followed up by publications covering four areas of England: Central England (1986), South-West England (1991), North of England (1994) and Eastern England (published by EH in 2002).
