Description

RCHME survey staff visited every working prison in England and Wales as well as a number of former prisons during 1995-1998. The survey's main aim was to record the current appearance of prisons and by combining this with detailed historical research produce a history of prison architecture.

The book "BEHIND BARS: The Hidden Architecture of England's Prisons" was published by English Heritage in 1999, followed by "English Prisons: An Architectural History" in 2002.
