GV II
House, now public house. c1620, rebuilt in brick in early C18; later alteration and front extension added c1900. Timber-frame encased in colourwashed brick, exposed at rear; roof of black-glazed pantiles with rebuilt brick stacks at left end and to right of centre. Originally lobby-entry plan. EXTERIOR: 2 storey 4-bay range articulated by full height pilaster strips: single-storey extension obscures ground floor at right. Extension has glazed door between three 2/2 horned sashes to left, two to right. To left of extension is 6-panel door with cross glazed overlight: further left is 2/2 unhorned sash window; at far left a second 6-panel door with glazed top panels. First floor lit through four 2/2 sashes, the right pair with horns. INTERIOR: ground floor: left room has bridging beams with sunk-quadrant mouldings and scalloped jewel stops: wall plate is reused mid C16 hollow-moulded beam with subsidiary keel mouldings. Blocked fireplace against left wall has winder staircase to its right. Centre fireplace opening rebuilt. Right room has bridging beams with sunk-quadrant mouldings, scalloped jewel stops and punched diamond insets. (Jenkins AB: A Hundred Years of Southwold in Photographs: Southwold: 1983-: 47-48).
