GV II
House, now Town hall. c1810; converted to Town Hall in early C20. Gault brick with hipped roof of black-glazed pantiles. EXTERIOR: 3-storey 3-window front. To left, 6-panelled door with plain overlight set in plain doorcase: two 6/6 horned sashes to right replace fire station doors. First-floor windows are 6/6 unhorned sashes under gauged skewback arches: on second floor, similar 3/6 sashes. Full-width cast-iron balcony to first floor. INTERIOR: straight staircase with turned balusters. First floor: Council Chamber, formerly 2 rooms, has 2 mid C19 fire surrounds and floral and acanthus plaster cornices. Stained glass portrait roundels in windows of former mayors and worthies.
