5/113 Knowle Cottage

GV II

Cottage. Mid C17, enlarged in the late C19, modernised with kitchen extension circa 1970. Plastered granite stone rubble; granite stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.

Plan and development: 2-room plan cottage with central through-passage facing south.

The right room has a rear projecting lateral stack and contains a tight winder stair. The left room was added in the C19, probably at the same time as an outshot containing pigsties and woodshed was built in front of the original right room. C20 kitchen extension on the right end. It is single storied; the cottage is 2 storeys.

Exterior: on the front the left room has a ground floor horned 4-pane sash and the passage front doorway contains a C19 part-glazed 6-panel door. To right the roof is carried down over the outshot. The roof is gable-ended. The rear windows are C20, some of them PVC with glazing bars, but one at first floor level is C18 or C19 and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass.

Interior: the original part, the main right room has its original C17 soffit- chamfered crossbeam with bar-runout stops. The fireplace here is granite stone rubble with an unusually thin (replacement?) oak lintel. The truss above, apparently an A-frame is buried into a crosswall. The back of a cupboard in the passage contains a disused C17 oak window; small, 2-light with chamfered mullion.

The left room has a plain-chamfered crossbeam and the oak lintel of the granite fireplace has a similar finish.
