TQ 2882 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER YORK GATE 35/34 REGENT'S PARK NWl 5.2.70 Nos 8 to 12(consec) GV 1 Unified terrace block. 1821-22 by John Nash as part of his Regent's Park Crown Estate development, gutted and rebuilt internally as one unit. Stucco; slate roof. Symmetrical elevation identical to and balancing Nos 1 to 5 q.v.

with end pavilions flanking giant Ionic colonnade, 4 storeys (including attic storey). ll windows wide in all. Rusticated podium ground floor with semi- circular windows set in deep arcade between end pavilions which each have a tripartite segmental arched window. 1st and 2nd floor glazing bar sashes of main range set within giant engaged colonnade of the Illissian Ionic order; end pavilions with tall tripartite 1st floor sashes with segmental arched blind lunettes and with eared architrave 2nd floor sashes. Semicircular arched blind headed attic windows and thermal windows to pavilions attics.

Cornice and balustraded parapet over ground floor. Continuous plain frieze and cornice over 2nd floor; attic cornice and blocking course. The 3 window returns have large enclosed porches with Greek Doric columns in antis. Rear rebuilt. Anthemion patterned cast iron balconettes to 1st floor windows of pavilions on front. Grecian,palmette-finialed area railings. York Gate was opened up by Nash to create a vista of Hardwick's new church of St Mary, Marylebone Road q.v.
