SX 89 NW CREDITON HAMLETS UTON

7/132 Edburys

GV II

Farmhouse and forge, now one house. Probably C16, greatly altered in C19 and C20.

Plastered cob on rubble. Footings; stone and brick stacks; slate roof (formerly thatch). Much altered 3-room-and-through-passage plan with inner room to west (left of south front). Large lateral stack to rear of hall and gable-end stack at service end formerly served C19 forge added to that end. Gable ended main block of 2 storeys with lower extension (now 2 storeys) to right with half-hipped roof.

Overall 5-window front. Passage door right of centre and hall and inner room to left broken forward slightly. Main block windows are C19 and C20 wooden 2-light casements with glazing bars including an horizontal-sliding sash with 9 small panes per sash at left end. Forge extension has secondary door behind C20 glass-sided porch and a reset C17 oak 2-light window with chamfered mullion above. To rear (roadside) another C17 window, 3-lights with ovolo moulded mullions, is reset in former forge doorway. Interior was rearranged in C19 with stair blocking rear of through passage but part of oak plank-and-muntin screen is exposed on hall side of passage, and one volcanic ashlar jamb of large hall fireplace is exposed. Roof not inspected. Formerly known as Hope Cottage.
