ELLESMERE RURAL C.P. OLD MARTON SJ 33 SW 7/138 OLd Hall and attached - garden wall (formerly 27.5.53 listed as The Old Hall) GV II* Farmhouse. Mid-to late C16 with later additions and alterations.
Timber framed with painted brick and rendered infill, rendered to rear; sandstone plinth and graded slate roof. Present house a T-plan with hall range of 3 framed bays and 2-bay cross-wing projecting to right but formerly with another gabled cross-wing to left forming an E-plan arrange- ment to front after addition of roughly central 2-storey porch in early C17. 2 storeys and attics. Framing: close-set vertical posts with middle rails. Continuous moulded bressumer to first-floor jetty of hall and porch. Front gable of cross-wing also jettied to first floor and hewn jetty to attic, both with moulded bressumers; V-struts from collar and carved corner brackets to porch and first floor of cross-wing. Late C18 or early C19 leaded casements throughout, 2 to left of porch on first floor and panelled shutters to windows below with H- and L-hinges, one on each floor to right of porch and to cross-wing with position of infilled window to either side of that on first floor. Porch has bobbin balusters to formerly open sides with herringbone infill below. Right side of cross-wing has massive extruded stepped external stack (top rebuilt in C20 brick) with position of infilled windows visible to either side on ground floor and to left on first floor. Rear. Open lean-to to left partly timber framed but full-length lean-to to right is mainly C20.
Prominent extruded external lateral stack to right has toothed band to base and paired and rebated shafts with projecting strips and moulded capping.
Small timber framed lean-to attached to right of C20 lean-to. Garden wall: attached to right corner of cross-wing and to rear left corner of hall range, encloses rectangular area of approximately 40 x 20m. Mid-to late C18 with later repairs. Red brick with moulded stone coping.
Interior. Chamfered ceiling beams and flat heavy joists to both ground- and first-floor rooms and timber frame exposed throughout. Oak winder staircase in hall range. Brick inglenook fireplace in left ground-floor room has stone jambs and massive chamfered wooden lintel; stone and brick corner fireplace in room above. Front room of cross-wing has panelled window shutters, infilled inglenook fireplace and C17 wainscot panelling; infilled inglenook fireplace to same stack in back kitchen. Jacobean panelling incorporated to several doors and inset panelled wall cupboards to both floors. Staggered single-purlin roof with queen-strut trusses in 3 bays to hall range and in 2 bays to cross-wing. B.O.E. p. 221.
