C18 with alterations, 2 storey and attic, red brick, slate roof. Stucco 1st floor band. Parapet. 3,1st floor sash windows with glazing bars, 2 on ground floor with half-round heads under slightly projecting brick arches with reeded imposts. Moulded arched architrave, to door, with rusticated voussoirs and jambs in stone, painted. Radial bar fanlight, and glazed margin all round allowing space for reeded door frame with narrow pilasters. 6-panel door with sunk upper panels and panelled reveals. Sculptured head keystone. Ornamental cast iron front railings. Wing, east, 2 storey, roughcast, 2 casements at 1st floor, one with glazing bars remaining. Slate roof. Raleigh House occupies part of the site of a house in which Sir Walter lived. It was in decay at end of C18, remainder burnt down in the 1805 fire. Edward Davy born at Raleigh House in 1806. In 1840 his machines for "Telegraphic Communication" were brought to Ottery and stored at the house for years. NMR.
