CURBRIDGE CASWELL SP3208 15/69 Barn and attached outbuildings 12/09/55 approx. 15m. E of Caswell House and Caswell Farmhouse (Formerly listed as Caswell House and Barns)

GV II

Barn. Probably C17; re-roofed late C18/early C19. Coursed limestone rubble; gabled stone slate roof. 5-bay plan with central threshing floor. Timber lintel over central double doors. Interior: collar-truss roof with butt purlins.

Subsidiary features: early C19 L-shaped loosebox range, of similar materials, attached to left. Early C19 covered cart-loading bays to right: of 6 bays, with stone piers to right side and hipped Welsh slate roof; plank loft door in barn for unloading sheaves of corn. Long outbuilding to rear, former stables, cowhouse and granary: mainly C17, with earlier origins; left side wall has timber lintels over three C17 plank doors with Norfolk latches and strap hinges, another similar door set in a chamfered stone architrave, a C17 chamfered stone light and four C19 hit-and-miss ventilators; stone steps to granary door.

Interior: cowhouse at front has ogee-stopped chamfered beams and cobbled floor; granary above has 4-bay through-purlin roof, with 2 collar trusses and 2 upper crucks with arch-braced collars and saddled apex. Cowhouse behind is open to 4-bay collar-truss roof with through purlins. Similar roof in hayloft over stables to rear, which have cobbled floor and oak manger and stalls. This farmbuildinq is a rare and important survival.
