The rows of Great Yarmouth were the result of construction being limited to within the medieval town walls until the 19th century: houses were built close together, forming a network of rows, or narrow parallel streets. The rows were known by traditional names based on local landmarks; they were numbered in the early 19th century, when there were 145. Many of the rows were cleared in the mid 20th century.
