Excellent quality ecclesiastical coverage, primarily interiors showing examples of Medieval wood and stone carving, also a few exteriors. The emphasis is on screens, however furnishings such as fonts and covers, alms boxes, statues, arcading and ceilings are also represented. One of the albums is mostly Devon, with some examples of Victorian screens in London, Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northampton, Clumber and Egmanton; Nottinghamshire; Cowley, Oxfordshire; Sledmere and Womerlsey, North Yorkshire and Hickleton, South Yorkshire. One print of Roath Church, Cardiff. Photographs taken c1890 - 1900
William Ellis was a photographer based at 34 St. Johns Church Road, Hackney, Greater London.
The first album, or rather group of photographs assumed to derive from an album, has no information regarding its provenance or acquisistion. The second album of church interiors, purchased via J Ray 0n 9 October 1997, was presumably commissioned by architects and craftsmen involved with the study, conservation or creation of church furnishings.
