Coverage : A wide range of ecclesiastical and secular buildings, with an emphasis on galleried coaching inns and other threatened building types identified in the City of London, Westminster and Southwark areas. Photographs taken from 1875 -1886. The NMR holds 2 complete sets of 120 prints, one original set in 2 large folios, the other bound into 3 albums by the Ministry of Works. Also held are 79 original 10" x 12" glass negatives and 117 copy negatives.
A handlist incorporating images taken for SPROL by Henry Dixon and others is available.
Received Via : Philip E Norman (see also PEN02), former Chairman and Honorary Editor for London Survey Committee and Historical Research Library, 1993 (donated duplicate set of 'Old London' prints).
Provenance : Established in 1875, SPROL aimed to record some of the then fast-disappearing buildings in London. A & J Bool ( see also BOO01) and Henry Dixon (see also DIX01) produced the photographs for 'Old London', of which there are 2 sets in the NMR archive, as well as other photographs by Dixon dating between 1875-91.
