Description

Rachel Hellier (1930-1985) grew up in a Yorkshire farming family. After obtaining a degree in agriculture she became an Agriculture Officer for the West Riding County Council until 1974. For the last 10 years of her life she was a Senior Lecturer in Agriculture at Askham Bryan College near York. She was a founder member of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Vernacular Architecture Group. Upon her death, her work relating to vernacular buildings passed to Barbara Hutton, President of the Vernacular Architecture Group and co-author of papers with Miss Hellier.

The collection comprises circa 400 prints and 650 35 mm negatives (b/w), mostly dating from the 1960s to the mid 1980s. The majority of views show rural, vernacular buildings in and around North Yorkshire. There is limited coverage of sites elsewhere in England, probably photographs taken during vernacular architecture group outings. Photography within the collection appears to be the work of Rachel Hellier, Barbara Hutton and others.
