The Western Heights fortifications, Dover - Dover

The fortifications of the Western Heights are a spectacular complex of earthworks and structures that are the largest and most elaborate example of 19th century fortification in England. Various issues contribute to risk, including fragmented ownership and lack of co-ordinated management; poor condition leading to a huge conservation deficit; lack of sustainable uses; poor connectivity to town centre; poor visitor infrastructure; poor permeability and way finding; unmanaged vegetation that obscures historic form and views; and heritage crime.
