Remains of Reading Abbey: a Cluniac and Benedictine monastery - Reading (UA)

Substantial standing remains of abbey established by Henry I in 1121. The majority of the ruins including the gatehouse, refectory wall and elements within the ownership of St James's church have been repaired. The mill arch, C12 to C13, is the surviving western wall of the Abbey Mill. The original flint rubble wall faces have been much repaired with inset areas of chalk ashlar and brickwork. There are areas of re-pointing in hard cement mortar and open joints. Implementation of repairs and long-term management is required.
